Iceland F-Roads Explained

What F-roads actually are
F-roads (marked with an F prefix, like F208 or F35) are unpaved tracks that lead into Iceland's interior Highlands, the parts of the country you can't reach from the paved Ring Road. They're rough gravel or lava-rock roads, frequently include unbridged river crossings, and are only accessible during summer. Every F-road legally requires a 4x4 vehicle, this is Icelandic law, not a suggestion, and rental companies void insurance coverage for 2WD vehicles that go on them anyway.
When they open and close
There's no fixed calendar date. Vegagerdin, the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, physically inspects each F-road every spring and opens it individually once snowmelt and river levels make it passable without damaging the fragile terrain underneath. The general pattern:
- Late May to early June: the easiest routes, like F35 Kjolur and F550 Kaldidalur, typically open first.
- Mid to late June: popular scenic routes like F208 to Landmannalaugar and F249 to Þorsmork usually follow.
- Early July, sometimes later: the remote interior crossings, F26 Sprengisandur and F88 to Askja, open last.
- Mid-September to mid-October: most F-roads close again for the season as conditions deteriorate.
Driving on a closed F-road is illegal and dangerous, the ground stays soft and vulnerable to vehicle damage well after it looks passable.
Checking today's actual status
This page explains how F-roads work in general. It does not track live open and closed status, several purpose-built tools already do that well by pulling directly from Vegagerdin's own feed, and duplicating that here would mean giving you stale information. The official source is road.is (mirrored at umferdin.is and trafficinfo.is), updated continuously by Vegagerdin itself. Check it the morning of any Highland drive, not days in advance, conditions can change overnight.
